With the silly season almost upon us and the temperatures starting to rise, it seems appropriate that I pen this article on the importance of water.  To start with, here are my 9 reasons why drinking water is great for your health.

Why Drinking Water Is Great For Your Health

  1. Weight loss :Water is one of the best tools for weight loss, first of all because it often replaces high-calorie drinks like soda, juice and alcohol with a drink that doesn’t have any calories. But it’s also a great appetite suppressant and often when we think we’re hungry, we’re actually just thirsty.
  1. Heart Healthy: Drinking a good amount of water could lower your risks of a heart attack. A six-year study published in the May 1, 2002 American Journal of Epidemiology found that those who drink more than 5 glasses of water a day were 41% less likely to die from a heart attack during the study period than those who drank less than two glasses.
  1. Energy: Being dehydrated can sap your energy and make you feel tired — even mild dehydration of as little as 1 or 2 percent of your body weight. If you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated — and this can lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, dizziness and other symptoms.
  1. Headache Cure: Another symptom of dehydration is headaches. In fact, often when we have headaches it’s simply a matter of not drinking enough water. There are lots of other causes of headaches of course, but dehydration is a common one.  Instead of reaching for a Advil, put the medicine box away and just drink the water.
  1. Healthy Skin: Drinking water can clear up your skin and people often report a healthy glow after drinking water. It won’t happen overnight, of course, but just a week of drinking a healthy amount of water can have good effects on your skin.
  1. Digestive Problems: Our digestive systems need a good amount of water to digest food properly. Often water can help cure stomach acid problems, and water along with fibre can cure constipation (often a result of dehydration).
  1. Cleansing: Water is used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the body.
  1. Cancer Risk: Related to the digestive system item above, drinking a healthy amount of water has also been found to reduce the risk of colon cancer by 45%. Drinking lots of water can also reduce the risk of bladder cancer by 50% and potentially reduce the risk of breast cancer.
  1. Better Exercise: Being dehydrated can severely hamper your athletic activities, slowing you down and making it harder to lift weights. Exercise requires additional water, so be sure to hydrate before, during and after exercise.

So How Much Do We Need To Drink?

By adopting Dr F. Batmanghelidj M.D’s hydration guidelines, to calculate how much water you should drink, you simply multiply your bodyweight in kilograms by .033 to get how much water you need to drink in litres PER DAY.

For example a 100 kilogram male should drink 3.3 litres of water per day.  Now that’s sounds like a lot, however if you break it down into more manageable amounts it works out to be 500 mills every 3 hours.

What is Total Dissolved Solids?

Total dissolved solids (TDS) comprise inorganic salts (principally calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, bicarbonates, chlorides and sulphates) and some small amounts of organic matter that are dissolved in water.  TDS is a measure of the combined content of all inorganic and organic substances contained in a liquid in molecular, ionized or micro-granular (colloidal sol) suspended form. Generally the operational definition is that the solids must be small enough to survive filtration through a sieve the size of two micrometer.

TDS in drinking-water originate from natural sources, sewage, urban run-off, industrial wastewater, and chemicals used in the water treatment process, and the nature of the piping or hardware used to convey the water, i.e., the plumbing.. In the United States, elevated TDS has been due to natural environmental features such as: mineral springs, carbonate deposits, salt deposits, and sea water intrusion, but other sources may include: salts used for road de-icing, anti-skid materials, drinking water treatment chemicals, stormwater and agricultural runoff, and point/non-point wastewater discharges.

What Is Hardness Factor?

Hard water has a high mineral content. Most water hardness is caused by high levels of metal ions, particularly calcium and magnesium in carbonate form; it also often contains bicarbonates and sulphates. Water hardness is rarely risky to health or safety, and in fact mineral springs – where the hardest water can be found – have often been health centres due to the alleged healing ability of hard water. However, because high water hardness means that pure water has been adulterated by a number of contaminants, it can be a nuisance at home and in industries. Silicates and calcium carbonate (one of the most common causes of water hardness) are good corrosion inhibitors, but they and other contaminants can leave deposits that over time can close up pipes. And any water contaminants have the potential to react with chemicals in undesired ways.  A simple test to determine the hardness of your water is soap.  Soft water lathers up easy, while hard water takes a little longer.

Why Not Plain Old Tap Water?

While it may be convenient to simply drink your water straight from the tap, there are many reasons why this should be avoided where possible and only done as a last resort.  Almost every public water supply in the world has been contaminated by human, industrial and agricultural run off. Also many public water supplies have added chlorine to kill bacteria, which is all very well and good, except these chemicals aren’t selective when they choose which bacteria to kill off.  They kill off ALL bacteria, including the good stuff.

Here’s another question you need to ask.  How old is the pipe network that carries your water from the town supply to your tap?  The state of pipes and channels are usually not known, and many dangerous agents can leech into your water supply. There are two things to look for when choosing a brand of bottled water to drink, total dissolved solids TDS and hardness factor.

If Not Tap Water, What Should I Drink?

You really only have 2 options for sourcing the majority of your drinking water, from a bottle or filtering.  We use a filtration system as we find over time it is the cheapest option and we are saving plastic bottles but using water from our supply.

There are two main reasons why we prefer to use this system as opposed to any other.

Firstly, it uses good old town water supply from the tap, so we don’t actually pay for the water, only the filtration system so it is way cheaper than buying bottled water.  This means that if you aren’t connected to town water supply or use tank water, this type of system won’t be of use for you.

Secondly, and most importantly, the quality of the filtered water is top notch.  And here’s an example of just one of the filtration systems (there are 10 in total).  The ceramic filer located in the top section removes rust, sediments and organic matter. It stops bacteria, cysts, parasites and hazardous micro-organisms.

The other day I gave our ceramic filter a quick clean.  I do this on average every three weeks and we change the filter entirely every 6 months.

Below are the before and after photos of the filter.

After Clean

As you can clearly see, the difference is obvious.

This is simply an illustration of 3 week’s worth of build up and grime and that’s just on the ceramic filter.  What about all the other filtration stages?  And if we weren’t drinking the water through this filtration system, then all of this grime and build up would end up inside of us.  Yuck!!!

That is just one example of why we use the Zazen Essential Water System. (not available in all countries this is our preferred option but here are some other great filtration systems).

There are a multitude of others.  You don’t have to be a scientist to know that the water we drink out of the Filtration System is way better for us than the stuff out of the tap

If bottled water is your preferred option, then I recommend the following brands of bottled water (because they have the required TDS and hardness factor) Fiji Water, Evian, Loli & Vittel and can be found in most supermarkets and grocery stores.

Also don’t forget if you are not keen on plain old water all the time then why not try Fruit Infused Water as this can be great for you as well.
