Staying Fit Over The Holidays

With Christmas just around the corner, many of you will head away for a well deserved break from the stressors of your daily life.

It’s a great time of the year to assess your last 12 months life journey, re-charge those exhausted batteries, and plan your next year’s journey.
I’m often asked, “How do I stay fit over the holidays?”

So here are my top 5 tips.

1. Moderation is the key

It’s a fact: we all over do it during the Christmas break. We over eat, we over drink, but we under move. That sleepy feeling you get immediately after Christmas lunch is not because you are tired, but because you’ve consumed so much food, that your digestive system has stolen all of your blood supply from every other part of your body to cope with the extra workload.

The key is moderation. You can still indulge in those rich creamy fatty foods that we all do, just don’t pile your plate to the dizzy heights of the Q1 apartments on the Gold Coast.

2. Keep moving

For those of you who do have a regular exercise regime, for some reason, Christmas seems to be the time when everything changes. We seem to stop doing what we did during the year and then wonder why it’s so hard getting back into the routine in the New Year.

The answer: keep moving. Don’t stop your exercise regime just because it’s Christmas. Keep going. The statutory holidays can still be days when you exercise. Remember statutory holidays are days off WORK, not days off life.

3. Keep a regular sleep/wake routine

Christmas is also that time of the year when we think that we can catch up on all that sleep we’ve missed out on over the past year. Well I’m sorry to burst your bubble folks, but like time, you can’t bank sleep, so there’s no point trying to accumulate as much sleep as you can over the holidays.

By all means get some well deserved rest but keep to your normal routine and get up at your usual wake up times.

This has 2 benefits.

1: it will give you some extra time in the morning to get a brisk walk in before breakfast.

2: you won’t have to re-set your body clock when it’s time to go back to work in the New Year.

4. Find activities the whole family can enjoy

If you do have the luxury of going away over the holiday break, find physical activities that the whole family can enjoy. Bush walking if you go camping, beach cricket if you go to the beach are just a couple of ideas.

Last year I took my family to Malta, Italy and Sicily for 4 weeks to visit my wife’s family and while away we went to a local children’s playground every day for a workout. We took with us a cute little piece of equipment called the “Ultimate instrument “.

5. Just do it

I’ve borrowed the last one from a popular sports brand. The reality is if you really want something you’ll find a way. If you don’t; you’ll simply find an excuse.

The biggest hurdle everybody faces is that they simply lack the motivation to take affirmative action. Don’t let this be you.

Knowledge isn’t power. Knowledge + Action, now that is POWER!
