Eat High Quality Protein Breakfast

Yesterday I talked about understanding how food affects your blood sugar levels and in particular how raising your insulin levels have a detrimental effect on your body’s ability to use body fat as an energy source.

Today’s FAT LOSS tip is an extension of that and is geared towards smashing a post WWII myth that was created by the powerful American Grain Association and continues to this day.

If you walk into any typical supermarket, you’ll find an aisle titled “Breakfast Cereals” and I bet that if you are anything like 98% of the Australian population, you’ll have at least 2 or maybe 3 of these boxes of cereals in your cupboards.  You know the ones I’m talking about, Nutri Grain, Corn Flakes,  Special K and Muesli  just to name a few.

Now if you go back through the history books, you’ll find that these cereals didn’t even exist until after WWII.  Before WWII most western civilisations ate protein and fats for breakfast.  Eggs, meats, nuts were high on the breakfast ingredient list.  But somehow WWII changed all of that and here’s why.

When our soldiers returned from war in 1945, the demand for phosphorous plummeted.  Phosphorous was the main ingredient for explosives and with the war over, bombs weren’t in great demand, so the manufacturers found another use for phosphorous.  The agricultural industry decided in their wisdom to use this huge supply of phosphorous as cheap fertilizer and as a result crops like wheat and grain yields increased dramatically.  Farming techniques also changed (crop rotation stopped) but that’s the subject of a whole new blog post.

At the same time, work was being done in other scientific arena s to show that saturated fat was killing us (again the subject of other blogs) and that we needed to move away from animal protein.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, the Grain industry created a huge demand for their product (grain) by convincing us that breakfast cereals were the answer to a cheap and nutritious kick start to the day’s activities for the time poor person.  Pour their product into a bowl, add milk and sugar and off you go.  An instant breakfast for the time poor person and as an added bonus, no fat from animal protein, so it’s good for your cholesterol levels.  Right?

Wrong.  What they didn’t tell you is that these same breakfast cereals had a truck load of added sugar to them (remember they are already heavily laden with glucose) because grains on their own are bland so the makers added sugar to sweeten them and make them taste nicer.  The added sugars caused all sorts of spiked insulin levels sending us into the roller coaster ride of sugar highs and then sugar lows.

Suffice to say breakfast cereals ARE NOT, I repeat, ARE NOT the most nutritious way to kick start your day, especially if FAT LOSS is your goal.  Avoid them at all costs.  You’ve simply been brain washed into thinking so.  Check out all the adverts on TV and they all say the same message – quick and easy.

So breakfast cereals are off the menu, what can you have.  Anything else.  Go back and eat what your parents and grandparents ate.  Meat, nuts, eggs, poultry, seafood, the exact same foods you have for lunch and dinner.  Now I’m not talking about the commercially grown and produced stuff.  I’m referring to the organically grown and free range meat products that are out there.

Here’s one of my recent breakfasts.  Don’t let the size put you off.  I’m not the smallest person.  There’s no reason why a 50 kg petite woman can’t have the exact same meal only half the size.

There is no reason why you can’t have this for breakfast.  Again it’s just the marketing that’s brainwashed you.

And to those who say, “I can’t eat meat for breakfast”. Of course you can, you’re just addicted to the early morning sugar hits.  It will take some disciplined work to break this addiction but once you do, your pancreas will love you for it.

Tomorrow we talk about another sneaky training technique to increase the EPEOC effect.  Don’t know what EPEOC is?  Stay tuned…
