I bet that the number 1 reason why women don’t lift weights as part of their fitness regime is because: “THEY ARE SCARED OF GETTING BIG AND BULKY MUSCLES”.

OK ladies, listen up, “I’m going to SHOUT this as loud as I possibly can”. You lack the one vital ingredient needed to get big and bulky by lifting weights. That ingredient is TESTOSTERONE. Women simply do not produce testosterone in sufficient quantity in order to get big and bulky muscles. It is a huge myth that women get big from doing weights and I cannot say this loud enough. In my 25 years in the fitness industry, I have never made a female client big and bulky from doing weights. IT JUST ISN’T GOING TO HAPPEN.

So now I’ve cleared up that, here are 10 reasons why you should lift weights as part of your fitness regime.

1. Lifting Weights Causes Body Fat Loss

Muscle needs more calories to function than fat. So by lifting weights, you build lean muscle mass, thereby increasing your body’s demand for energy. In essence you’ve increased your metabolism.

2. Lifting Weights Makes You Stronger

This is a no brainer. Of course you get stronger when you lift weights. Duhh! Not only do your muscles get stronger, but so too do your bones, ligaments, tendons and joints.

3. Lifting Weights Improves Your Flexibility

When done correctly. I have a 72 year old female client that has just removed the hand rail from her toilet because she no longer needs it to get up and down.

4. Lifting Weights Increases Your Sports Performance

All you sports girls out there, whether it’s running, netball, hockey, soccer or whatever, if you don’t have a weights program incorporated into your overall regime I bet your opposition does hence the reason why you aren’t winning. See reason 1, 2 & 3 as to why you are being beaten.

5. Lifting Weights Makes You Sexy

By far my favorite, check out these two girls Justine Switalla and  Nicky Jankovic.

Both are friends of mine in the fitness industry. How hot are they? Be honest!!! Oh and guess what, they lift weights, HEAVY WEIGHTS! Be sure to check out their websites: http://www.justineswitalla.com and http://www.nickyjankovic.com

6. Lifting Weights May Reduce Your Risk Of Osteoporosis

See reason 2. Your bones get stronger!

7. Lifting Weights May Reduce Your Risk Of Type II Diabetes

It causes your body to utilise consumed foods in rebuilding damaged tissue fibres. If the correct types of foods are consumed, your body processes the glucose content more efficiently, thereby minimising the risk of excessive blood glucose levels.

8. Lifting Weights May Reduce Your Risk Of Breast Cancer

Of the top 5 cancer killers, we know FOR SURE the cause of 2. Smoking causes lung cancer and excessive sun causes skin cancer. According to the Australian Cancer Council the other 3 (bowel, breast and prostate cancer) are directly linked to lifestyle, nutrition and physical activity.

9. Lifting Weights May Reduce Your Risk Of Heart Disease

The heart is a muscle and like skeletal muscle, when you lift weights, it gets stronger too. A stronger heart muscle can only get good for you.

10. Lifting Weights Makes You Feel Better ABOUT YOURSELF

Once you’ve showered, changed and eaten after a workout, I guarantee you’ll feel absolutely fantastic about your achievements. And believe me, there is no greater feeling than smashing through some PB (personal best) or even just some mental road block.

I am also willing to bet that the number 2 reason why women don’t lift weights is because they don’t know what to do. Well, there is help out there. Seek out the assistance of someone who knows what to do. There are lots of places to seek help. No more excuses, off you go now!
