TIP 23 STOP DRINKING SUGAR

We already know that if you take in more calories than you burn off in a day and repeat this process over and over again, you are going to gain body fat.  Don’t get me wrong, while I don’t like the way in which we interpret this equation, it’s not far off the money.  So if you want to lose body fat, you need to come up with strategies where you can “A” increase the amount of calories you burn off in a day and “B” reduce the number of empty calories you consume. Note here how I differentiate a calorie into an empty calorie.  Tip 24 explains what an empty calorie is.

If you want to eliminate empty calories, then simply cut out sugary drinks.  Why?  Because almost every single sugary drink on the market today provides lots and lots of calories and virtually NO NUTRITIONAL value whatsoever.

They say that energy drinks give you energy and they’d be right.  But what else do they give you? Nothing, zilch, zip, nadda.  There’s virtually no vitamins, minerals, fibre or antioxidants in any of the sugary, caffeinated salty drinks on the market today and those advertising claims that they have added vitamins and minerals like calcium etc.  The quantities are so tiny, that the health benefit of consuming the drink is more than wiped out by the 13 teaspoons of sugar you had to drink to get it.

But there’s a more sinister reason to eliminate sugary drinks if fat loss is your goal.  It’s this.  Sugary drinks counts for almost 37% of most people’s total daily caloric intake and it is the number 1 contributor to excess calorie intake in the western world today.  Because there are so many calories contained in such high concentrations in such small packages, it’s really easy to over consume them.

Here’s a classic example.  Take the 660 ml bottle of coke containing 200 calories.  How many serves in this bottle?  According to coke, there are 2 ½ serves in this bottle.  So technically, there is enough coke in a 660 ml bottle for the consumer to have over a period of 3 days if they spread the consumption to 1 serve per day.  But there’s the flaw.  No-one saves the second 2/3 for later on.  They simply drink the whole bottle right there and then, so what should be 2 ½ serves actually ends up being 1 serve.  Instead  of drinking  66 calories per day, you treble your consumption by drinking the whole bottle containing 200 calories in one hit.
