Eliminate Alcohol

Now I know I sound like a party pooper, what with Christmas only 37 days away, but the truth is, if you are absolutely serious about losing body fat, then alcohol in all its forms is definitely off the menu and don’t be fooled into thinking that the “low carb” stuff is ok to drink because here’s a little tip for you, it ain’t the carbs in alcohol that’s your problem, it’s the alcohol.

So, why is alcohol so bad when it comes to losing body fat?  Well the answer is all in how the body processes alcohol and what it does with it once it’s been processed.  Let’s take a look at what the body does with 120 calories of alcohol, say 1 shot of your favourite spirits.

We all know that alcohol is toxic and a poison hence the reason why it’s so stringently controlled and its sale is illegal to minors because of its effect on the brain.  24 calories or 20% are taken off in the stomach, small intestines, kidney, muscles and brain.  The remaining 96 calories or 80% end up in the liver.  Firstly the liver converts ethanol to acetaldehyde which causes Cirrhosis.  Then it’s broken down into a number of different substances eventually creating ATP and citrate.  Citrate forms new fat cells or Denovolypogenesis.  Some of the new fat cells will escape the liver as fatty acids which end up in the muscles causing muscle insulin resistance.  Some won’t escape the liver and will become lipid droplets in the liver.

So you can see that of that 1 shot of spirits you drank, 80% of the alcohol content ended up in the liver where it was converted to new fat cells.  Multiply that 1 shot by a night on the turps and you can quickly see how alcohol not only makes you fat, but very very sick as well.

So, if body fat loss is your main goal, then you just have to cut out all forms.  Tomorrow we talk about how getting your macronutrient ratio right for you.
