Eat Right for Our Metabolic Type

Have you ever wondered why is it that there are so many different types of diets out there all claiming to be the fat loss magic bullet and when you take a closer look at those diets, you see that most simply tinker with the ratio of macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates & fats)?

The Atkins Diet has a very low amount of carbohydrates in it.  The Pritikin Diet had a more balanced ratio and the Ornish Diet goes in the other direction and has a very low ratio of protein & fat and a high ratio of carbohydrates.  Three completely scientifically proven diets all were claiming to be the magic bullet to fat loss and all working.  How can this be true?  The answer?  They are, for a certain portion of the population.

Metabolic Typing was discovered by a dentist and breaks us up into three classifications, protein types, carbohydrate types and mixed types.  Protein types tend to require more protein in their diets. Carbohydrate types require more carbs and mixed types need a mixture of both.  (Interestingly enough, all three types need fat anywhere from 20-35 %.)

The premise is that humans evolved over millions of years to eat whatever foods they had available to them in the regions of the world that they were living.  Inuit Indians of northern Alaska ate a ton of fat and protein and very little vegetable matter, they evolved into protein types, and some tribes of South American Amazonian Indians were virtually vegetarians, living on plants, roots, berries and a small amount of protein.  The European races that roamed out of Africa and remained in Europe had both protein (wild game) and carbohydrates (fruit wild berries, roots) and they evolved into mixed types.

So you see how evolution enabled the human species to survive on whatever we had available.

The problem with 21st century living is, I can walk into a supermarket and eat a Chilean banana, a Malaysian piece of Snapper, a New Zealand Lamb roast, rice from China and pineapple from Cairns. We literally can eat any food we want from anywhere in the world, regardless of the season, time of year or even time of the day.

So, what’s the answer?  Eat right for your metabolic type.

Go back and discover what your metabolic type is and eat what your evolutionary ancestors set you up for.  I’m lucky.  I wear my ethnicity all over my skin.  As a Polynesian, my ancestors were protein types.  They ate a lot of seafood, a lot of meat, seasonal fruit, and in ground roots & berries.  Where are also a young race by evolutionary standards, 40,000 – 100,000 years old.  What we definitely are NOT meant to eat is grains, cereals, highly refined and processed sugars and definitely not alcohol.  Just look at those ethnic races with higher than normal rates of type II diabetes, renal failure and high susceptibility to alcoholism and you’ll soon discover that Maori, Pacific Islander and Aborigines all figure disproportionately in those statistics.

Tomorrow we talk about mixing up the tempo of your exercise phase to illicit a different physiological response for more body fat burn.
