Eliminate All Processed Sugar

I’ve written on the evils of sugar before, so this will be short and to the point.  If body fat loss is your main goal, you simply have to eliminate all forms of processed sugar from your diet.

There are 3 types of sugar in the world, glucose, galactose and fructose.  All the rest are simply combinations of these 3.  2 are found in small quantities in nature (galactose in dairy and fructose in fruit) the other is found in almost everything we eat.  2 can only be processed by a very small area of the body (galactose & fructose) the other can be processed by virtually every single cell in the body.  So clearly we were meant to eat glucose in large quantities and the galactose and fructose in very small amounts.

Sugar (the white stuff) was discovered in the early 1700’s and by 1815, Europeans were eating about 7 kgs per person per year.  By 1955, that figure had blown out to 50 kgs per person per year.  Only recently as last week, I measured the weekly processed sugar consumption of 2 new clients.  One ate 899 grams in 1 week, the other 780.  This typical Brisbane based husband and wife with 2 kids managed to consume almost 2 kgs of sugar IN ONE WEEK and they had no idea they were doing it.  And here’s the thing, they weren’t eating it, they were drinking it.  A bottle of ice breaker, a bottle of Red Bull & a can of coke per person A DAY!!!

So what happens to all that fructose that we eat?

It gets rapidly; totally, uncontrollably and immediately converted to circulating fatty acids that avoids all of our internal control mechanisms in the process.  When we eat proteins carbohydrates, and fat the hormones insulin, glucagon and CCK control our eating.  There is no equivalent control mechanism for fructose.  When we eat fructose in fruit there are enough receptors in the pancreas to trigger an insulin response.  Its only when we over consume fructose in the form of soft drinks, fruit juices, sugar laden cereals and every other processed food that its managed to find its way into, that this loop hole in our appetite control mechanism is revealed.

So what happens to all that circulating fatty acids that this excess fructose gets converted into?

It gets stored as body fat, plain and simple. So, once again I say, if fat loss is your goal, then eliminate all forms of processed sugar.
