How Old Are You and How Do You Know?

How many of you hear yourself saying, “I can’t do that?”  Or perhaps you think to yourself, “I’ll never be that rich.”

I write a lot of articles and blogs about mindset and positive self talk as a way of teaching people how to create a positive mindset, but still I come up against some resistance from people who simply can’t see themselves achieving certain goals.  In essence they have a negative mindset.

So, if I can convince you by the end of this article that you have the power to convince yourself of anything, simply by positive self talk, would you promise to have a go?

Before I show you, I want you to ask yourself this question?  How old are you and how do you know?

In my former life in law enforcement, it was my job to arrest crooks and put them before the courts in order to prosecute them.  I had to gather all the evidence to prove my case beyond a reasonable doubt and to do that, the evidence had to prove different elements or ingredients and if you left out one ingredient, quite often your case failed and the offender was acquitted.  In certain sex crimes, the prosecution has to prove the age of the victim as it is a vital ingredient of the case.  Did you know that you as a victim are not the best form of evidence to testify as to your own date of birth?  The best way to prove your age is to have someone (usually your mother or someone else present) testify that on such and such a day you were born.  You see, you can’t say when you were born, because you don’t actually know.  You only know when your birthday is through what you’ve been told.  In legal speak its hearsay evidence which is inadmissible and can be excluded.  Even your birth certificate, drivers license, passport or any other form of identification is still a form of hearsay evidence.

My point is this.  You’ve been told over and over again that your birthday is on such and such a day and guess what?  At some stage, you started to believe it, so eventually, now I bet when you are asked, “How old are you?” you are able to say with 100% certainty, standing proud and tall on a stack of bibles not only your age, but your date of birth, the city in which you were born and probably the name of the hospital.  All of this because someone once told you often enough that you now believe it to be true.

So, if you tell yourself something often enough, regardless of whether you know it to be true or not, after a while, you will start to believe it, until such time as you will eventually reach the point where no-one will be able to convince you of the contrary.

This is why I’ve suggested in previous articles that you read your goals out loud to yourself twice a day, first thing in the morning and last thing at night.  At some stage, you will eventually reach the point where not only will you believe them to be true, but no-one will be able to convince you of the contrary.  You can convince yourself of anything, so long as you hear it often enough!
