Eat Foods That Take More Energy To Digest Them Than There Is In Them:

The foods we eat contain a number of our daily requirements like energy, vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, fiber and water just to name a few.  When we eat these foods, our bodies need to digest them first in order to extract the parts that it needs to use.  The act of digestion takes energy to perform (which is why when you train and you have undigested food bouncing around in your stomach, you can’t do both as both require energy to do and so you get this uncontrollable need to vomit)

One of the sneaky little tricks that body builders do when they are stripping back their body fat stores in order to show their hard earned muscles for competition is to eat lots of foods that have a negative calorie balance.  What’s negative calorie?  It means that the food has less calories in them than it takes to digest them.

But how is this possible?  How can a food use more calories to be digested than there is in them?  Well it’s all got to do with heat and absorption.  A calorie is a measure of the amount of energy that a food contains as a unit of heat.  If that food gets broken down and absorbed, then eventually that energy source (calorie) will also be absorbed into the body’s digestive system.  However, some of the content of some foods doesn’t get absorbed by the body and as a result, it gets passed straight through.  Foods with a high fibre content fall into this category.

The other great thing about eating negative calorie foods is that they are jam packed full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants & fibre, meaning they are great for you!

The list of well-known negative calorie foods includes apples, asparagus, beets, broccoli, cabbage (green), carrots, cauliflower, celery roots, celery chicory, chili peppers, cranberries, cucumbers, dandelions, endive, garden cress, garlic, green beans, eggplants, grapefruit, lemon, mango, lettuce, onions, oranges, papayas, pineapples, radishes, raspberries, spinach, strawberries, tangerines, turnips and zucchini.

So if fat loss is your goal, you can increase the volume of your meals by ensuring you have a plentiful supply of negative calorie foods on your plate at all times.  The extra volume will give you the sense of fullness, while knowing that the amount of calories you’re eating will never become an issue.

That’s it for today folks.  Tomorrow we look at what foods to avoid immediately before exercise.  Till then have a great hump day and I’ll see you tomorrow.
