Shorter Rest Periods

When lifting weights as part of a fat loss regime, most people who’ve never used an experienced trainer have gotten their advice from magazines and body building books and let’s face it, the fitness industry hasn’t been around that long.  As an example, when I left high school, my career path didn’t even exist.  (As a side issue chances are your kids schools are training your kids for careers that don’t exist yet either.

So what’s the best rest period for fat loss?  Before I answer that question you need to understand the purpose of the exercise that you’re doing.  Most people correlate exercise to calories burned.  They believe that if they exercise long enough, they will burn more calories than they eat and therefore they’ll lose body fat, because everyone knows that it’s simply an equation, calories in versus calories out.  Burn more than you consume and you’ll lose body fat and consume more than you burn and you’ll gain body fat right?  Well, not really because it ain’t that simple.  Answer me this question.  If I eat 2,500 calories a day, how much exercise must I do to burn that off (and more) in order to lose body fat?  The answer is a truckload, however, I can tell you now, I don’t do truck loads of exercise.  I train 3 days a week for between 45-60 mins per day.  I eat between 2,500 – 3,000 calories PER DAY and yet I am losing body fat.  Why is that?

rest

The answer is in THE WAY in which I train.  Not the actual training method.  This fat loss tip is about rest periods. Other tips will tackle the training styles etc

Certain rest periods create a higher growth hormone response.  Others allow for full and complete recovery of the body’s ATP stores.  Which do you want? Well that depends on what the goal of that training session is. The benefits of higher growth hormone levels are obvious.  So too are the higher levels of ATP stores, but from a fully fat loss issue, go for shorter rest periods.  Anywhere from 10-60 seconds rest between sets is what you should be aiming at.

Tomorrow’s tip is all about listening to your body.  Have a great day!
