Drink Coffee or Caffeine Before a Workout

Body builders do it, fitness models do it and even professional rugby players do it! They take a hit of caffeine before training or competing.  Why and why is it a great way to lose body fat?

Caffeine has been around for thousands of years.  It’s benefits appeared in an Arabic medical text in 900AD.  It was first scientifically identified by a German chemist named  Friedlieb Runge in 1815.

As a mild stimulant, caffeine acts on the central nervous system warding off drowsiness and temporarily increasing alertness and this is why if body fat loss is your goal, taking caffeine before a workout can help.  You see a more alert and mentally focused person is more likely to train harder, with more enthusiasm maintaining strict form and technique than someone who feels tired lethargic and lacking energy to train.

There are however some negative benefits that you must be made aware of.  Caffeine is a diuretic.  It causes you to release fluid, which simply means that you need to keep well and truly hydrated at all times.  Caffeine is also addictive.  Ask anyone who has tried to wean themselves off their regular hit about the withdrawal headaches.  Because caffeine is a stimulant, it should also be avoided in the afternoon/evening; otherwise you could find yourself staring at the ceiling with your eyes wide open at 2am instead of studying the back of your eye lids counting sheep.

I love coffee, so I choose to drink it.  If you don’t like coffee, that’s fine.  My choice is to drink one of the more expensive organically grown brands.  That way I know I’m getting a great source of caffeine before my workouts.

So, if body fat loss is your goal, get a hit in you before your next workout and see how well you train.

Tomorrow we are going to talk about avoiding having fatty acids and fat storage hormones present in your blood stream at the same time.
